ABOUT ME
Katie Rothwell
Background
I’ve always had a passion for learning about the body, keeping active and healthy. After finishing my degree in Physiology and Sports Science, I joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a Physical Education Officer. Here I was responsible for keeping service men and women fit to fight with the added bonus of providing Adventurous Training. When I left the RAF in 2012, I was suffering with chronic back pain. Having had scans, painkilling drugs and physiotherapy, nothing seemed to help, until I found a wonderful therapist who treated me using a combination of massage and craniosacral therapy techniques. Since then, I have studied Chronic Pain and have learned that it is not as straight forward as you might think. It is multifaceted, in that there are many contributing factors causing pain. Pain does not just involve the biology of the body, but also the mind and lifestyle play a key part. I now feel empowered to not only manage my own pain but coach others out of pain too. This is why I came up with the BEAT Pain Methodology.
Why B.E.A.T Pain?
Pain is multifaceted in that there isn’t just one cause of pain and therefore the treatment of pain has to be holistic and have a multifaceted approach. That’s where the BEAT pain approach comes in. Having suffered and recovered from pain and studied pain for over a decade, I have formulated the BEAT pain approach which stands for the following: Brain, Energy, Activity and Therapy.
By understand the brain’s role in pain we can start to overcome it’s grip on our lives.
Energy includes sleep and nutrition. Sleep is the bedrock of wellbeing and without restorative sleep one cannot heal. Therefore having an understanding of ways to improve the quality of ones sleep you can start to heal from pain. Nutrition is also vitally important for healing. The food we eat can either contribute to inflammation or reduce it. Inflammation is a common cause of pain.
Activity or movement is another lifestyle factor needed for optimal health and healing. During episodes of pain the body can become fearful of movement for fear of pain. By moving within safe parameters we can re-wire the brain to reduce fear of movement. There are also many other benefits of movements such as the production of our very own opioids called Endorphins which have a pain relieving effect. Katie is a Pilates instructor and an ex RAF Physical Education Officer and ex PE teacher so is well placed to coach rehabilitation exercise.
Therapy: there are many different forms of therapy out there and not all therapies work for all people. It’s about finding the right therapy and therapist for you. Katie offers massage, craniosacral therapy, dry needling, cupping and more. She tailors each therapy session to the client using a combination of her various skills. The BEAT Pain program coaches on all these aspects online so there is no need to be local to Katie.

How Can Katie Help You?
My ethos is to not only provide hands on therapy, but also to educate clients about their pain and empower them to help themselves. Not only will it give long lasting help without having to rely too heavily on hands on therapy sessions, but it also gives ‘you’ the client a sense of control. During an average session I use a mixture of techniques. I pick and choose from my skills to provide a bespoke treatment plan for each and every client.
I also deliver the BEAT pain program which is fully online and designed to educate and empower you about your pain, using the 4 core pillars: Brain, Energy, Activity and Therapy. This program not only provides education on pain but also 1-1 online coaching sessions every week, meals plans, exercise plans and accountability.
