Gentle and holistic approach to enhancing your overall wellbeing

Pilates

What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise pioneered in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates.  It is great for strengthening and toning deep muscles such as your core.  Typically it is performed on a mat using either bodyweight or simple pieces of equipment such as resistance bands, balls, foam rollers, light weights and pilates rings.  The exercises are performed with the following principles in mind: breathing, concentration, control, centring, precision and flow.  Along with benefits to your physical health such as improved strength and flexibility,  it also benefits your mental health thanks to the mindfulness approach.

How Can Pilates Benefit You?

  • Improved physical strength and flexibility: particularly core strength.
  • Improves balance and posture.
  • Pain Relief: By strengthening muscles you can improve posture and encourage muscles to work as designed.
  • Stress Reduction: The slow movements whilst concentrating and focusing on breath calms the nervous system.
  • Emotional Wellbeing: Exercise releases endorphins and feel good hormones.
  • Improved Sleep: Exercise promotes good nourishing sleep.

Is Pilates Right For You?

Pilates is great for everyone from elite athletes to those recovering from injury.  It has a strong mind body approach which makes it particularly good for recovering from chronic pain.  Anyone wanting to improve muscle tone, flexibility, strength, and reduce fear of movement can benefit from Pilates.

  • Katie's classes are a great way to get a thorough workout and stretch for the body and are always held in a friendly and relaxed manner. Each class is different and always includes something challenging - but it doesn't matter if you can't quite do it as there is never any pressure. If Katie's class is the only thing I do all week, I still feel that I am maintaining a good level of fitness and agility.
