The BEAT Pain Approach

Ready to BEAT back pain and claim your life back?

Katie Rothwell

Hi, I’m Katie Rothwell and have also suffered from, and healed from chronic lower back pain. At the age of 30 I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. As a Physical Education Officer in the RAF at the time and a very fit young lady, I was told that my spine was fragile and this I shouldn’t do anything to impact it. It was like I had an identity change overnight. One physio once told me “the pain was in my head” which made we want to cry. I wasn’t making this up and why would I?

I am now pain free and living life to the full again.  I’ve done triathlons and a half marathon since.  So what was my turning point?

  • I found the work of Lorimer Moseley who helped me understand pain and through this understanding I learned that pain didn’t necessarily = tissue damage and this reduced my fear of movement. He gave me hope.
  • Through craniosacral therapy, I learned that part of the reason I got back pain was because I was suppressing emotions and dealing with stress with very little sleep.  I had just become a mother, was solo parenting whilst my husband was serving in Afghanistan and sleep was a luxury.  I now realise (through the work of Dr John Sarno) that this is all relevant to chronic pain.
  • I found Pilates which helped me regain strength and start moving in a non fearful way.
  • Finally I played with nutrition and did the Keto diet to support my husband. Whilst doing this I couldn’t believe how flexible and energetic I felt, so studied the nutrition management of pain.

I want to empower people like you through education and actionable steps to break free from the exhausting grip that is chronic pain. My credentials:

  • a degree in Sports Science and Physiology,
  • Level 4 sports massage,
  • Craniosacral therapy with Upledger
  • Nutritional management of pain Certificate
  • Pilates instructor (Mat level 3)

I’ve run a clinic for clients like yourself for over 10 years and helped 100s of clients out of pain.

I have now overcome my pain and have my life back.  The same can happen to you.  Imagine a life where you

  • get back to the things you enjoy,
  • socialise again,
  • feel fully productive at work,
  • have more energy to do the things you want to do because pain isn’t zapping it?
  • feel happier.
  • Life with more freedom
  • Enjoy activities with your family

This is possible for you.

The traditional way of treating Back Pain

Chronic back pain is rarely caused by structural damage

The facts

  • 85-95% of those with lower back pain do not have identifiable physical or biological origins for their pain.
  • Only 1-5% of lower back pain symptoms are due to serious tissue damage.

In 2020, lower back pain (LBP) affected 619 million people globally (WHO). That’s nearly 10% of the world’s population.  In 2050 that number is predicted to rise to 843 million LBP sufferers.

  • 35-50% of the UK population have chronic pain.
  • 40% of NHS sick leave is due to back pain.
  • Lower back pain is the leading cause of disability.

Medics are very good at treating acute pain (nociceptive pain) but when it comes to chronic pain there is more to it than the biomedical approach. (I explain more about this in my free training video – link).  The traditional methods of treating back pain include pain killing medication which may or may not be effective but can also have side effects.  You may have had scans which show a slipped disc, dehydrated discs, degenerative discs or more. Often these are a normal sign of wear and tear.  However,  seeing pictures of your spine’s degeneration can cause more worry and fear and thus one would catastrophize making pain worse. You may have been told to avoid certain forms of exercise like running or impact sports and this can lead to fear of movement.  Modern pain science has indicated that pain is much more complex than structural damage alone and these methods are frequently ineffective. Persistent pain thrives on fear and worry because pain is protective.

How is the BEAT Pain approach different?

The BEAT pain approach is a holistic approach to pain management.  We look at the Bio-Pscyho-Social model of pain because pain is multifaceted, in that there are many factors involving the brain, gut, social factors, physical factors and even psychological factors to name a few. We use this model to educate and treat the body as a whole and as an individual.  3 people can present with lower back pain but each of them have different causes.  The biomedical approach treats the symptoms with medications etc.  The BEAT pain approach identifies the causes of pain and treats these which is a much better long term solution leading to a better quality of life.  I explain more about his in my video:
